Mookaite

This bracelet features 8mm beads of Mookaite, a strikingly colorful variety of radiolarite (a type of chert or jasper) found exclusively in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia. At 8mm, the beads are the standard "classic" size for gemstone bracelets, providing enough surface area to showcase the stone's famous "earth-tone" palette.

Mookaite is unique because it is composed of the fossilized remains of tiny marine organisms called radiolaria. Over millions of years, these remains were silica-fied, resulting in a stone that is exceptionally smooth, opaque, and hard. The name comes from Mooka Creek, the specific area where this stone is unearthed.

Geological Profile

  • The Color Palette: Mookaite is famous for its "sunset" colors. A single 8mm bracelet often includes a mix of deep burgundy, mustard yellow, creamy white, sandy beige, and even rare shades of lavender or grey. These colors come from varying concentrations of iron and manganese.

  • Fossil Origin: It is a biogenic sedimentary rock. The silica that makes up the stone was originally the skeletal structures of microscopic sea creatures that settled on the ancient ocean floor.

  • Hardness: 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. This makes it a very durable daily-wear stone. It is resistant to scratches and maintains a high-gloss, mirror-like polish.

  • Fracture: Like flint or obsidian, mookaite has a "conchoidal" fracture, meaning it breaks with smooth, curved surfaces. This allows the 8mm beads to be polished to an incredibly sleek, glass-like finish.

Visual Characteristics

  • Opaque and Bold: Unlike rose quartz or clear quartz, mookaite is completely opaque. The colors are solid and saturated, making the 8mm beads look like polished river stones or marbles.

  • Brecciated Patterns: Some beads may show "brecciated" or shattered patterns, where different colors of the stone appear to have been broken and fused back together by nature.

  • Texture: Mookaite has a very "dense" feel. Because of its high silica content, it feels substantial on the wrist and retains a cool temperature for a long time.
