Purple Fluorite is a halide mineral with the chemical formula CaF2 (Calcium Fluoride). On the Mohs hardness scale, it ranks as a 4, making it a relatively soft and sensitive mineral that should be handled with care.
In its chemically pure form, fluorite is actually 100 percent colorless. The rich, grape-purple saturation in these spheres is caused by a fascinating atomic phenomenon known as "F-Centers" (short for Farbzentrum, the German word for color center). During its formation deep underground, natural geophysical radiation from surrounding rocks knocked a fluoride ion completely out of its normal position in the atomic matrix. This vacant space trapped a single, unpaired electron.
