Armenian Obsidian

Armenian obsidian is some of the most sought-after volcanic glass in the world, sourced from the high-altitude volcanic plateaus of Armenia. Formed by the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava, this obsidian is unique because it often features complex, multi-colored patterns that are rarely found in other localities.

While standard obsidian is jet black, Armenian specimens are famous for their varieties, including midnight-blue, deep green, and the highly prized silver and gold sheen. These colors and patterns are not caused by pigment but by the way light interacts with microscopic mineral inclusions trapped within the glass.

Geological Profile

  • Volcanic Origin: This is an igneous rock that cooled so quickly after an eruption that crystals did not have time to grow. The result is a natural glass with a smooth, uniform texture.

  • Hardness: It sits at a 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. While it is harder than window glass, it is more brittle than quartz and can chip or shatter if dropped on a hard surface.

  • Conchoidal Fracture: Like all obsidian, it breaks with sharp, curved edges. This property made Armenian obsidian a critical resource for ancient civilizations in the Caucasus for crafting ultra-sharp tools and weapons.

Visual Characteristics

  • Mirror Luster: When polished, Armenian obsidian has an exceptionally high, liquid-like shine. It is often used in high-end jewelry and carvings because of its ability to hold a perfect edge and surface.

  • Translucency: High-quality Armenian obsidian often shows a "smoky" translucency at the edges. Unlike opaque jaspers, light can penetrate the surface of the glass, revealing internal flow patterns and swirls.

  • Tactile Feel: It is incredibly smooth to the touch and reaches skin temperature quickly compared to crystalline stones.
